Efficacy of 15% peracetic acid for controlling leaf spot and bacterial diseases in white onion (Allium cepa) in Peru cultivation

Peracetic acid is a broad-spectrum oxidizing disinfectant evaluated as an alternative for controlling foliar and bacterial diseases in onion. The efficacy of a 15% peracetic acid formulation against Alternaria porri, Stemphylium vesicarium and bacteriosis in white onion (Allium cepa) grown under drip irrigation in Villacurí, Ica, Peru, was determined. A field trial was conducted using a randomized complete block design with five treatments (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 L/200 L of water) and four replications. The formulation was applied once as a foliar spray at 600 L/ha. Disease incidence and severity were evaluated before application and at 2, 5, 7, and 10 days after application. Severity values were transformed using √x+1 and analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan’s test. For A. porri, 1.0 L/200 L achieved 93.7% control at 7 days, whereas 0.75 and 0.50 L/200 L achieved 86.6% and 78.6%, respectively. For S. vesicarium, 0.75–1.0 L/200 L achieved 79.2–88.2% control, while bacterial disease control ranged from 76.6% to 87.6% at 5 days, with no phytotoxicity or negative effects on beneficial fauna. Doses of 0.50–1.0 L/200 L outperformed the untreated control, particularly 0.75–1.0 L/200 L.
