Abstract

Cacao is a crop of great economic importance to the San Martín region; however, the presence of cadmium in its seeds limits its commercialization and directly affects producers. Given this problem, the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is proposed as a biotechnological strategy to improve plant development and reduce cadmium accumulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mycorrhizal colonization on growth and cadmium mitigation in cacao seedlings of the CCN-51 variety, established in two contrasting agroecosystems of San Martín. A completely randomized block design with eight treatments and 12 replicates was used, including four inoculation conditions (control, Rhizoglomus variabile, R. dunense, and mycorrhizal consortium) in the localities of Shima (0.630 ppm Cd) and Ledoy (0.130 ppm Cd). Treatments with mycorrhizal consortium and R. variabile significantly promoted growth in height, leaf area, number of leaves, and shoot and root biomass. Although reductions in Cd in leaves and roots were not significant, a decreasing trend was observed compared to the control. Inoculation with AMF appears to be an effective alternative for mitigating Cd accumulation.
