Abstract

The hematological profile was evaluated using reference intervals in fighting cattle from Bolívar Province, Ecuador. A descriptive study was conducted on fighting cattle from Hacienda La Cristalina, Guaranda canton, classified into three age groups [31 heifers (13–16 months), 49 cows (> 3 years), and 20 bulls (> 3 years)]. Blood samples were collected from the median coccygeal vein and analyzed using an automated hematology analyzer to assess hematological parameters. The hematological profile obtained was consistent with clinically healthy cattle, showing overlap among categories, although with biological variations attributable to age and sex. The erythrogram exhibited a wider range of values in females, whereas bulls showed a more homogeneous profile. The leukogram revealed a broader neutrophil range in bulls and greater eosinophil variability in adult females, while heifers showed greater variability in platelet count and plateletcrit. Regarding total solids, the lowest values were observed in bulls. It is concluded that the hematological profile of fighting cattle falls within the physiological ranges of the species; however, its reference intervals should be interpreted specifically for this population.
