Heavy metal contamination in water bodies is a critical issue, exacerbated by urban growth and deficits in basic sanitation, leading to improper discharge of wastewater. This study evaluated the efficiency of the macrophyte plants Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes in removing heavy metals from domestic wastewater in the Shilcayo River, located in the district of La Banda de Shilcayo, Peru. A sample of 120 L of wastewater and 72 plants was used over a 6-month period. Three treatments of 5, 10, and 15 days were implemented, along with a control sample. The results showed that the 15-day treatment was the most effective, achieving 96.33% arsenic removal with Pistia stratiotes and 96% with Eichhornia crassipes. Both treatments met the ECA-water standards for the conservation of aquatic environments. It was concluded that the 15-day treatment with Eichhornia crassipes was the most efficient in removing lead and cadmium, achieving safe levels according to regulations.
