Violation of the dignity of the human person in penitentiary centers: a current alarming reality

We identified and examined systematically the best available scientific evidence on the violation of the dignity of people confined in prisons, reflected by various authors, taking as a reference the research available in the EBSCO database of the last four years. We carried out a search on the terms "violation", "dignity", "human person", "penitentiary centers" in articles published since 2017. We presented the review of the 37 selected references resulted in the exclusion of 30 studies that did not comply with our criteria, which is why the results of the remaining seven studies in a descriptive way. We have founded that corporal punishment is a central aspect of the Latin American prison experience. It is abominable that in the XXI’s corporal punishment subsists within the Latin American prison experience, an act with which human dignity is affected, and although there are clear proposals to start the process of humanization of prison systems, this only remains in the tried. This bibliographic review will serve as support to make a proposal to reform the penitentiary system in the region.
