Abstract

The present study evaluated the expression of genes associated with the inflammasome complex in different brain regions of rats exposed to environmental hypoxia at high altitude (4,200 m a.s.l.). The animals were divided into a control group (Lima, 161 m a.s.l.) and a high-altitude exposed group (Casapalca, 4,200 m a.s.l.), each subdivided into five subgroups of three animals, with samplings on days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28. The results showed a differential increase in gene expression depending on the brain region. In the striatum, gene expression of NLRP3, IL-6, IL-1β, and HIF-1α showed significant increases, especially sustained in IL-6 and IL-1β. In the hippocampus, early gene expression of NLRP3, IL-6, and IL-1β was observed, while HIF-1α showed no variations. In the frontal cortex, gene expression was more limited, with no changes in NLRP3 and late increases only in IL-6, IL-1β, and HIF-1α. In the hypothalamus, early increases in gene expression of NLRP3, IL-6, IL-1β, and HIF-1α were recorded, with subsequent fluctuations over time. In conclusion, high-altitude exposure induced gene expression of the inflammasome complex (NLRP3, IL-6, IL-1β, and HIF-1α), with variable sensitivity mainly in the striatum and hypothalamus.
