Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of prostate cancer in a regional hospital in Peru, 2017-2022

Abstract

Prostate cancer is the most common urological neoplasm and a leading cause of mortality in adult men. Its slow growth and asymptomatic course lead to late diagnosis in advanced stages, significantly reducing the chances of effective treatment. To determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of prostate cancer in patients treated at a regional hospital in Peru, 2017-2022. Basic type study, simple descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional, with a population of 231 and a sample of 52 patients. Use of a data collection form for patients aged 50 to 89 years diagnosed with prostate cancer in the period 2017-2022. The majority of patients were between 70 and 79 years old (50%) and were mestizo (98%), with 60% coming from rural areas. Prostatitis was present in 69% of cases, 100% with a palpable nodule, 71% with PSA >25 ng/ml, Gleason score 5-7 (G2-G3) in 49%, clinical stage T2 in 64%, and adenocarcinoma in 88% of cases. Prostate cancer was more common in men older than 70 years, of mixed race, and from rural areas, with a history of prostatitis and elevated PSA levels. Adenocarcinoma was the predominant histological type, associated with localized clinical stages and moderate Gleason differentiation.
